SIDMA College Student Affair Department (STAD) under the leadership of Mr Terence B. Stephen organized a three days (12-14 October 2019) team building camp for the 23 newly appointed members of 2019 / 2020 Student Representative Council (SRC) at Kiulu Farm Stay, Tamparuli.
According to Mr Terence, the main focus of the event was: confidence building, developing leadership skills as well as promoting collaborative and communication skills among the newly appointed SRC. Mr. Zainurin Bin Bakiah was appointed as chief facilitator of the camp as well as to lead the three day activities. He was assisted by Mr Saidin from Kiulu Farmstay Campsite. To encourage full participation and engagement from each member, the 23 SRC members were divided in four groups, namely: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta.
One of the main team-building activities that were carried out at the camp included Climbing High Wall and Giant Ladder. Through such activities, participants were trained on building high performance and interdependency in team spirit, fostering stronger relationship and cohesiveness to ensure the safety procedure being followed by all members.
Other activities conducted such as Spider Web, Stand by Me, Maze Nowhere, Cup of Love, Obstacles Courses and many more. Apart from enhancing stronger relationship and cohesiveness among team members, it also built high performance and interdependency in team spirit, as well as forging better communication and understanding among all members.
Various other activities conducted were Mysterious Card, Ice Breaking, Koyak Kertas, Nightline and more were also conducted. During the evening (after dinner), various indoor activities such as Mutiara Hikmat and also H2H sessions were held.
The participants also collaborated, planned and organized their own cooking. During evening they had BBQ for dinner, before they continued their team building activities.
Prof Dr Morni Hj Kambrie, Chairman and Founder of the college, Puan Azlina Ngatimin (Director, Corporate Marketing and Business Development) along with Puan Azizah Khalid Merican (CEO) upon visiting the camp on 12 October 2019 were very impressed with the organization and running of the event. They congratulated Mr. Terence and all the staff from STAD for their successful organization of the event.
Dr Morni also took his time to share with the participants on tips for success. Among others, he advised students to be committed in achieving the goal, and what they are willing to sacrifice to achieve. He added that if they are fully committed in what they are doing, motivation will follow. They also need to have fun and look after their team members, including their parents, be creative and be imaginative. They too need to protect themselves from burnout, and not to depend too much on others, get rid of distractions, and ultimately plan and implement their way to success. “Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts”
The camp concluded with certificate presentation to all participants of the event on 14 October 2019. The participants when met after the event mentioned that they have never been so engaged, challenged, and entertained by an event facilitator. They commented that the camp challenged them to think differently, as well as allowing them time to reflect and apply basic elements to solve any situations. This will be invaluable both to the SRC team as well as for the team to further build their rapport with SIDMA College management team and with their colleagues, the students. The ability to develop a strategy and spirit to deal with people that we are engaged in are the key to one’s success in whoever and whatever one is dealing with. They too hope that more of similar camp should be held for the benefit of all other students of the college.
